ABOUT LATINO MEMPHIS
Latino Memphis is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization which has served Latino clients throughout the Mid-South for the past 20 years. Our mission is to assist Latinos in this region by connecting, collaborating and advocating for health, education and justice; we envision a future in which every Latino in the Memphis metropolitan area has the opportunity and the resources to become an engaged member of the larger community. Mauricio Calvo, our executive director, explains our work in relation to his own experience as an immigrant to the United States: “My team and I work every day to make the growing Latino community here feel as welcome as I was made to feel when I came here from Mexico City in 1993. For many Latinos living in Memphis, we are the only place they can turn for assistance with law enforcement, healthcare, education and other basic services.”
Our approach is threefold: Our first objective is to ensure our clients are connected to needed services by aligning our resources and goals with those of the already robust community of nonprofits and other service providers in the area. Second, we offer direct, culturally relevant programming to address the immediate needs of our clients’ families such as education, safety and crime prevention, and legal immigration assistance. Finally, we advocate for and with our clients by engaging with local leaders, media outlets, and state and federal policymakers to effect policy change and ensure that the Latino voice is heard in decisions affecting the community.
