HOT BUTTERED SYMPHONY: Shaft, Isaac Hayes, & the Memphis Symphony Orchestra

Featuring members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and former Stax and Royal Studios musicians; moderated by John Bass and Allie Johnson, Rhodes College Stax Records and other Memphis studios – American, Ardent, and Royal – worked closely with not just pop, rock, R&B, and soul musicians, but Memphis musicians of another stripe – the classically trained strings, brass, and woodwinds of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. For decades, MSO players have added texture and depth to innumerable recordings, most notably, the works of Isaac Hayes, including his landmark “Theme from Shaft.” Join us for a lively discussion about the relationship between MSO and studios in town, some great stories about Isaac Hayes and other Stax artists, and a stirring performance of Stax hits by the MSO String Quartet.
